New: Recipes & David’s posts on living healthfully

We have added a new page for recipes (see the top right hand column of the blog for a list of the blogs’s pages) where we will add some of our favorite recipes. We will emphasis on healthy choices. Where they are not, we will try to include an admonition to choose your serving size and eating frequency accordingly.

Today, we have added two recipes for healthy breakfasts: oatmeal and granola (we eat it with yogurt and fruit).

David is writing a regular series on his current journey to improved health at his blog.  A link is also on the right hand column.

Barfield’s Christmas letter 2009

David and Cathy at 30 years of marriage

David and Cathy at 30 years of marriage

Here is news from 2009 (and the last part of 2008).

2009 brought our 30th wedding anniversary. Five years ago, we did not celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary as we planned since Cathy’s Dad needed our care during in his final 1 ½ years of life. So we put off the big celebration until our 30th anniversary. The celebration included two main parts described below.

On August 30, we publicly celebrated the occasion by renewing our wedding vows. Cathy looked beautiful in her wedding dress.  We had a square dance afterward, as we did on our wedding day. On our blog at www.dcbarfield.org, for those of you who could not attend or want to see it again, we have posted the following: a 4-minute slide show with pictures of the ceremony; the 8-minute slide shown at the ceremony highlighting our 30 years of marriage; and our wedding vows, our “Note to our guests,” and “Our Story” from the program of the event.

Last December we went on a special 30th anniversary vacation in the Philippines (where Betsy was teaching). Our three weeks there included a week in Manila; 4 days on a lovely resort island known for its beautiful beaches and excellent scuba diving; and some time in a mountainous part of the Philippines known for its 2000 year-old rice terraces. David did his first scuba diving and Cathy and Betsy para-sailed. However, at the last location, Cathy fell and broke her ankle. Fortunately, it was at the end of our trip. We hobbled back to the U.S. and over time, Cathy has recovered fully. For full details of our trip, go to our blog and click on the link “Our Philippines trip”.

Other highlights from the year:

David continues to enjoy and be challenged by his work as chief engineer of the Kansas Division of Water Resources (see ksda.gov/dwr for more). Difficult duties this year have included laying off 10 staff due to budget issues and two weeks of trial in March.

Cathy continues to teach science classes to local homeschool students and this fall started teaching biology to 19 high school students at Veritas Christian School.

Betsy returned from her two years in the Philippines in June. This year she is teaching 3rd and 4th graders at Olathe Christian School. She has been living in nearby Eudora with her friend Jody. She has been dating Matt Pool since late summer.

Amy is in her second year of teaching elementary strings at three Topeka Public Schools and continues to date Josh Hilger.

Megan is in her junior year at Washburn University, studying music with a possible minor in Mass Media. This summer she began volunteering at the Pregnancy Care Center and this fall they offered her a job as administrative assistant, which she loves. She is dating Brandon Hash.

Our dog of a year and a half, Bingley, had surgery on his knee in February (so we had to deal with two cripples early this year). Bingley’s recovery was much quicker than Cathy’s. His highlight for the year is going along with us to Wisconsin. He loves the water and sailing with David.

Dave’s Vows

My dear Cathy, I love you.

I thank our God that He has given you to me as a helper, someone to share my life with. I believe you are God’s very best for me. It humbles me to know of the great responsibility I am taking this day, but I trust that God will surely make me adequate to do what I believe so strongly is His will.

Because I am confident that this is His will, I can wholeheartedly vow that I will do my best to lead you, to love you, to provide for you, to protect you and to be faithful to you. I further vow to continually seek God’s will for our lives and to do all I can to fulfill you.

Cathy’s vows

David, I love you.

God has called me to you to love you and cherish you all the days of my life. I pray that I will be worthy of this privilege. I desire to be used of Him to fashion you into the best man He desires. Our Father wants His best for you and He sent me to help you strive for His best and not settle for anything less.

I vow before our Lord that I will do the best I can to obey you, to love you, to serve you and honor you as the head of our home. I know it will not always be easy but I know that God has hand picked and chosen me for you. So, I believe that He will grant me all that I need to be your helpmeet.

To our guests

Thanks for taking the time to share this day with us.  We have been blessed with great friendships and support of family and others around us over the years.

While many of our day would call 30 years together as quite an “achievement”, we see this as a time to give thanks to God for the blessed years He has given us. We believe it is more His achievement than ours as He fashioned us, brought us together, given us life and marriage sustaining values in His Word, has guided us and given us strength for each day to live out the commitment we made on our wedding day.

As we did 30 years ago, we can rejoice on this day because we know that God has called us to commit our lives to one another, but this would have never taken place if we first didn’t commit our lives to Jesus Christ. We made this commitment to Him on the basis of four facts.

  1. God loves us very much and wants the most meaningful life for us.
  2. We can’t experience this on our own because we have sinned and become the god of our own life.
  3. Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty for our sin.
  4. We can accept Christ’s payment for our sins by trusting our lives to Him and asking Him to be Lord of our lives.

We believe this is not only the basis for the best marriage, but for the best life. Won’t you commit your life to the One who loved you enough to die for you?

“Lord Jesus, I need you. I invite you to come into my heart and forgive my sins. Take control of my life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be.”

Please tell us when you make this commitment, so we can rejoice with you.

Our Story

Below is the “Our Story” we wrote at the occasion of our 30th wedding anniversary celebration, August 29, 2009

David was born the first child of a career Army enlisted man, J.D. and his wife Anna. Most of his years as a child and youth were in Kansas except for three years in Hawaii and a year in Florida. He attended the University of Kansas, graduating in civil engineering during December 1977.

Cathy was born the first child of a Marine pilot who later turned to teaching English, Eugene Sullivan, and his wife Nellie. Most of her growing up years were in Minneapolis, Minnesota and its suburb, Plymouth. She attended St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University where she graduated with a degree in biology and a teaching certificate in 1978.

Our meeting, marriage, and first year together (1976-1980)

In the summer of 1976, this Kansas boy and Minnesota girl joined fifty other students and staff of Campus Crusade For Christ in Panama City Beach, Florida. During the beach project we enjoyed getting to know each other. We discovered many things in common such as a desire to serve Jesus Christ, a desire to serve overseas in ministry by using our vocational skills, the commonality in view of family life and intentional living.

While the summer ended with no definitive plans for an enduring relationship, our friendship continued through lots of letter writing, occasional phone calls and a few times seeing each other at large Crusade student conferences. This growing friendship eventually led David to take a job in Hopkins, Minnesota (a Minneapolis suburb) after his college graduation. Eight months later, during October 1978, David, always a deliberate decision-maker, surprised no one in asking Cathy to marry him.

We married June 16, 1979 and spent our first year of marriage in Hopkins as David continued to work for an engineering consultant and Cathy as a substitute teacher.

During the summer of 1980, we joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), raised financial support, and attended staff training in Fort Collins and three months of intensive training for international service in Los Angeles. Ten days after completing the second training, we headed to Bophuthatswana, South Africa for 3 years.

Africa days (1981-1984)

We joined a particular ministry of CCC that combined serving others via our vocational skills and ministry. David was regional engineer for the Bophuthatwana Department of Water Works overseeing the development and maintenance of the region’s water supplies serving its 300,000 people. Cathy taught biology at a high school that was seeking to serve as a model for the new “nation”. Both our jobs were very challenging and rewarding. David’s primary ministry focus was in a local church, where he taught Sunday school, preached from time to time, led Bible studies and spent time with a few men one-on-one. Cathy’s ministry was focused on students at her school and with teachers in a poor rural village about 15 minutes from our home.

During September 1983, Betsy was born, starting Cathy’s career as mother.

Return to the U.S. / a growing family (1984-1989)

During March 1984, we returned to the United States. Based on a look at our options, we decided to move to Lawrence, Kansas where we could both help with the start of a new church being planted by my close friend, Chuck Thomas, and where I could pursue a master degree in water resource engineering at KU. The U.S. was just ending a recession and engineering jobs were scarce. I eventually found a job with the state of Kansas at the Division of Water Resources (DWR). I had no idea of how enduring that employment would be.

Cathy continued to happily serve in her roles of wife and mother. In July 1985, we were blessed with our second child, Amy, and in 1989, a third girl, Megan.

Since moving to Lawrence, we have both been very active with Community Bible Church. Between the two of us, we have served in almost every role imaginable in the church. David has been an elder at the church since 1987. Cathy currently oversees the children’s Sunday school program and helps lead the women’s ministries.

School days (homeschooling years, 1989-2007)

A couple years before Betsy was ready to start school, Cathy was exposed to the option of homeschooling on a radio show. At that time the option of homeschooling was still new and seen as radical. Eventually, we did some serious research on the various options for our children’s education and we decided to try homeschooling.

Each of our children was educated at home through their entire K-12 years and we have been actively involved in supporting others who have made the same decision. We began serving as the coordinators of Lawrence’s homeschool support group our second year of homeschooling (when David went along with Cathy to an organizational meeting, and asked a few too many questions). David has also served in state leadership since 1986, now in an advisory capacity.

When our older girls were ready to take high school biology, Cathy began teaching science to them and other Lawrence area homescholers.

Caring for Cathy’s Dad

After Cathy’s mother died, her Dad decided he wanted to sell his house in Minnesota and buy a home with us. The search for the right situation took a couple of years and culminating in buying a home in rural Douglas County in September 2001.

However, it was not until the summer of 2004, due to his declining health, that he moved in with us. It was our privilege to have Cathy’s Dad live with us for the last 14 months of his life.

Kids leaving the nest, David’s job change

All three girls attended college while living at home, each at different schools. In 2007, Betsy graduated with a degree in elementary education from Mid-America Nazarene (Olathe). Betsy served two years as a missionary/teacher in the Philippines and is now teaching at Olathe Christian School. Also in 2007, Amy graduated with a degree in music education from KU. Amy teaches elementary strings in Topeka public schools. Megan is currently starting her junior year in music at Washburn in Topeka.

In June 2007, my boss, Kansas Chief Engineer of almost 25 years decided to retire. While I never aspired to the job, I was asked to be Acting Chief Engineer while a national search was conducted. As I did the job I was encouraged by many to apply for the job and found I enjoyed its many challenges. In November of 2007, I became only the fifth Chief Engineer since the creation of the DWR in 1927.

Closing thought

Overall, it has been a great and rewarding 30 years together. We thank God that, we can sing:

“Our love’s secure, so rest assured
Come what may ’til that day
We’ll walk forever, holding hands
By God’s grace ’til that day
We’ll walk forever, holding hands
